かもしかの森の西、本谷山の中腹標高920mに、旧石器時代（15000年以前）の遺跡「出羽洞穴」があります。この洞穴は、宮崎県内では最も古い時代のもので、長い歴史と自然は古代のロマンを感じさせます。

（Located 920 meters up the side of Mt. Hontani in the western part of Kamoshika Forest, artifacts from the Old Stone Age (some 15 000 years ago) have been found in this cave. These are the oldest artifacts to have been discovered in Miyazaki Prefecture, making the cave a unique location to visit.）
